Description
High Falls is one of the three large volume waterfalls on the Genesee River that flow through the city of Rochester. High Falls is wider that it is tall and cascades 96 feet over a slight overhang. The massive gorge below offers views of the remnants of the many industrial mills from the past which derived its power from the falling water. Today, the wat is used to produce hydroelectric power.
In the early 1800’s Nathaniel Rochester built his small village, originally known as Rochesterville, and is what is now Rochester for one reason, the power of High Falls. The fast moving waters created by this spectacular landmark provided water power to the first mills. By 1838, Rochester became the largest producer of flour in the United States and as a result the nickname “Flour city” caught on.
Overlooking the falls, the High Falls District offers large river gorge views and provides a look into the past with its historic buildings and cobblestone streets. Today, this district along with its restored 19th century ambiance offers some of the most modern renovated office spaces along with residential lofts, townhomes and flats.
